PT1

1. I have trouble throwing things away,  letting go of material as well as digital possessions.  Old downloads, screenshots, install packages, photo  had become the mountain of clothes in the corner of my bedroom .                                                                                             

i. Realizing I have a light hoarding sensibility, I came to the conclusion I need to take out the trash; but first I had to memorialize this gumbo of files that I conveniently hid from sight, before they must be cast into digital abyss                                                                                                                              

    B. Examples of files that were once characterized as “important,”                                                      

i. Importance; i.e., with affection, out of necessity, for pleasure                                                               

1. 8 downloaded W-2 forms vs. a screenshot of your partner’s butt vs. a meme that speaks to you

1. rediscovered bits of data, detached from their necessity and original purpose, now seem to have no more significance to your life other than the amusement they provide

C.  Note: you are given two chances to get rid of files, to delete temporarily and finally, permanently. 1. The item ends up in the bin  2. The bin gets taken out to the landfill.

i. Where is the landfill, and how to find it?

D.   That is rhetorical question, because, as everyone knows, the landfill is a non-entity, it is a place where our rubbish files are, depending on how you look at it, condemned or mercifully given over to death.    And you have the power now to command that permanent deletion.  

 

PT2

E.  Sometimes systems fail, and files disappear on their own;  like the time this summer when my trusty blue Western Digital 1 terabyte external harddrive (otherwise known as “nugget”), given to me by my brother as a high school graduation present, suddenly couldn’t retrieve the files I had amassed over the years on it - videos I spent months on, edited photos, essays, more videos - all of them disappeared, with no back up present on the primary hard drive of my laptop. These MOV and JPEGs, billions of tiny pixels which I wrestled with over the past four years, comprising at least a quarter of my finished work, now no where.  They were never in any tangible place, but I had trusted in finding them in hardware.  After panicking, seeking the help of tech-savvier people, plugging Nugget again and again into different computers anyway to see if the files would appear miraculously, only to be let down, I realized it was gone.  

i. In the past few months, I’ve dealt with the grief of real people I love passing - Renata, Peter, Grandpa. I went through a breakup - a genial one, but still a breakup.  The same helpless grief that came with people I loved going away or passing away was back.  People and deleted files cannot be retrieved once gone, and maybe that’s why it’s taken me so long to let go of this unexpected archive of weird gems I found on the internet.  In the time that I have worked or thought on this piece, all of these shitty moments happened, and have grafted themselves onto the list of files in my trash.  So, Before I take the final step of releasing this archive laden with a  hundred or so screen shots and dumb memes, take a moment with me to remember a selection of titles from my small library.
